Message from the Head of School
We’re on the move! As you read this, our newly renovated high school building is being readied for classes for Mo nday morning, and the excitement is in the air. On Thursday of this week, high school students joyously sang as they carried their Torah from the portable buildings to the new High School at Donna Klein Jewish Academy. Middle school students greeted the Hachnasat Sefer Torah procession once it arrived on the main campus. The Torah now has a new home, and so do our high school students.
This joyous day reinforces the saying, “Home Is Where The Heart Is.” Our K-12 students now will be united on one one campus, sharing experiences and mentoring one another, and enjoying many heartfelt memories that will last a lifetime.
In addition to this milestone for our school, adding to our “koach” (strength), many other connections will be made during our upcoming PTO Welcome Breakfast on Wednesday, September 2, 2009, and at Curriculum Nights throughout September. Please plan on attending them, as they are a way to connect with fellow parents and your child’s teachers, and to get a “hands-on” feel for the learning environment of which we are so proud. Click here for the schedule.
Shabbat Shalom,
Karen Feller
Head of School
Lower School Highlights
Fourth-grade classes were introduced to Rashi and his writing. Rashi was a rabbi in the middle ages and is famed as the author of the first comprehensive commentary on the Talmud as well as a comprehensive commentary on the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible). Rashi used his own writing, done with ink and a feather, to provide explanations. Fourth-graders used paint and brushes to learn Rashi writing.
The students also learned about the shofar, and how it wakes us up to become better people, in preparation for Rosh Hashanah.

Curriculum Night
Dear Middle School Parents,
I hope you’ve saved the date for our Curriculum Night on Thursday, September 3, 2009, at 7 p.m. We look forward every year to greeting old friends and making new ones at Curriculum Night. Your children’s faculty are as anxious to put faces to names as you are, and to explain the upcoming year.
We will meet in Zinman Hall at 7 p.m. where you will receive your schedule and after a short introduction proceed through your child’s “day” in the classrooms.
Enjoy your Shabbat, and we’ll see you on Thursday.
Sincerely,
Carol Kolsky
Middle School Principal
Fifth Grade Rocks!
The newest grade in the middle school has arrived! Our 5th grade has gotten off to one of the best beginnings ever. All 66 students were ready for their entrance to middle school. Summer packets were completed, written work on The Egypt Game was handed in, Mrs. Stabler ate some funny creatures in science class that turned out to be just raisins, and everyone showed up on the first day of school with smiles, fabulous book bags, and supplies.
New schedules were completed by the students themselves and everyone knew where to go by day two. We personally want to welcome new students Morgan Cohen, Roneet Dardashti, Molly Gross, and Brian Neubauer (pictured) to our DKJA family. Ms Heather Servos has joined our team this year, and we are excited to have her teaching our students math.
As always, “Fifth Grade Rocks,” and we are looking forward to a fantastic year filled with new, exciting, and interesting learning experiences.
Sixth-grade Reminders
Parents are reminded to please be sure that students are prepared with essential supplies daily for each class. They should leave the bulk of their supplies in their lockers and refill them on an as-needed to basis.
• All students will be keeping their Siddurim in class cubbies assigned according to their math groupings. The math and geography textbooks are to remain at home throughout the year. It is our intent to have them carry the least amount of materials in their backpacks as possible.
• Check the Eagles’ Net Regularly. Teachers are making a concerted effort to have all homework posted on the homework page for 6th grade. All extra handouts, lessons, and PowerPoints will be posted on each teacher’s subject page.
• Students are encouraged to meet with their teachers for review, extra help, and test preparation. Hours are posted on the Eagles’ Net.
• The 6th grade overnight trip will take place February 3-4, 2010. February 5, 2010 is a teacher work day. Further information will be provided on this.
Thank You,
Shireen Butman,
6th Grade GLA
High School Highlights
This past weekend, 63 students from our high school went on our retreat Shabbaton. The theme of the weekend was koach = strength. Zach Herbert worked tirelessly with a group of students representing the Shabbaton Committee to plan the event over the summer months. Many activities were planned so that students were able get to know each other. On Friday night, we had a combined service led by Hila Sachs, Shiri Zweibel, Ashton Krawitz, and Danielle Zfat followed by a lively Shabbat dinner. We had Divrei Torah by Joey Michael, Shiri Zweibel, and Ashton Krawitz. Rabbi Ya'akov Green, our new Judaic Studies teacher, instructed participants with a new song followed by a community rendition of bircat hamazon. Evening activities were led by Zach Herbert, Adam Orshan and included Jackie Lebovitch, Jeff Landau, and Hila Sachs.
Shabbat morning, two Tefillah options of traditional and egalitarian minyanim were led by our teachers. Students were divided into three groups for a round-robin of learning that included topics on true friendship, self-knowledge, and responsibility. The learning segments included source sheets citing information from Ethics of our Fathers and the Rambam. Teachers led a Jewish trivia contest and optional games were followed by Havdalah.Saturday night the students let off steam with an evening of dance and music. We returned Sunday exhausted but happy about a wonderful Shabbaton.
Shabbat Shalom,
Miriam Engel
Director of Judaic Studies and Jewish Life
